5 Easy and Fun Ideas for A December Daisy Troop Party

*This post contains affiliate links.

It's that time of year where the Girl Scout forums and Facebook pages are getting a little heated about the upcoming holiday season. There are three viewpoints on this matter:

1. We are going to celebrate Christmas and do Christmas activities even though everyone in our troop does not celebrate the holiday.

2. We do not celebrate any December holiday because that is not inclusive to those who do not celebrate any holiday this month.

3. Everyone in our troop celebrates Christmas so we do it as a troop...what is the big deal?

I covered this topic in depth in this blog post. Bottom line for me...there should be no specific holiday celebration of any kind if it means that a single girl in your troop will be left out. Girls Scouts is inclusive...that was the intent of the founder, Juliette Gordon Low.

So what can a Daisy Girl Scout leader do with her troop that will make a December meeting fun and meaningful? Of course, you can do many different service projects with your troop, so your girls learn that there are others in this world who need a helping hand. Young children are compassionate, and this is one way to plug into this.

Here are some fun ideas for you to have an inclusive December meeting.

Make a Sock Snowman

Everyone has extra socks lying around with no mate. Use these for a fun winter decoration that does not have to go back in the box once the December holidays are over.

Here are the directions, which includes a video, on how to make a tube sock snowman.

There are other versions of this craft and you can find the directions and videos here.

Make a Styrofoam Snowman

You can also make a snowman out of styrofoam balls. Directions for this craft can be found here.

There are plenty of snowman craft kits available if you are too busy to go out and buy all of the components for these snowman crafts.

Edible Snowman Crafts

Don't the cookies in the photo look delicious? You can make your own edible snowman for the girls to eat at the party and also to give as gifts.

If you do not have access to an oven, then you can bake snowman shaped cookies at home and decorate them at your meeting.

There are all kinds of cookie decorations-sprinkles, sugars, and more-that you can use to make these cookies shine!

Gift Exchanges

I am not a fan of gift exchanges, as I explained in this blog post from a few years ago. However, one thing I have read about on the Girl Scouts Gab Facebook page was a Sock Exchange. Each girl brings in a cute, inexpensive pair of non-holiday socks and they can pull it from a grab bag. The girls can also bring in an extra pair of socks to be donated to a nursing home or homeless shelter.

One troop leader mentioned that the girls filled the sock with small items like candy. I would only be concerned with food allergies is you decide to do this.

The same ideas can be done for books-make sure they are not holiday themed or based on a particular movie or television character. An extra book can be donated to a children's hospital or local preschool.

Marshmallow Games to Play

Marshmallows are a sweet and inexpensive treat to use for games. They do not leave a big mess and the girls are sure to want to eat them when the games are over.

One game to play is to see how many marshmallows the girls can stack in a set amount of time. Start with a longer time like 60 seconds and then shorten them as the next round progresses.

There are lots of fun games your Girl Scout troop can play with marshmallows.

Another game to play that I used to do with my children's class parties is to tie a piece of yarn around a marshmallow. Divide the girls into teams of two each. One girl swings the marshmallow towards the other girl and she tries to catch it in her mouth. After she does, then the girls switch and the other girl gets to try to eat it.

Using mini marshmallows and chopsticks, you can have the girls play this Minute to Win It game.

Here is another game that uses mini marshmallows, straws and paper cups.

Host a New Year's Eve Party

For younger children, New Year's Eve is a time that many grown ups get dressed and leave the house for a fancy party. I remember being left with a babysitter on this special night when I was a child.

Daisy Girl Scout Party Ideas for Those Who Are Not Bridging

*This post contains affiliate links.

Updated November 2019

Congratulations!  You are finally getting to the end of your first year of being a Daisy Girl Scout leader.  If you are not bridging from Daisy Girl Scouts to Brownie Girl Scouts because you are in your first year, there is no reason why you still cannot end your year on a high note with a celebration.

Daisy Girl Scout Party Ideas

Think of all that you have accomplished.  First of all, you made it!  Do you remember how nervous you were after you signed up to be a leader?  Do you remember feeling overwhelmed at how you were going to do all of this?

Look at you now!  You are a woman who can confidently take her troop on field trips (you know how to fill out those forms!), plan meetings (you finally got it all organized) and maybe you even participated in the Girl Scout cookie sale this winter.
And look at your girls!  Some may have been shy at the first few meetings, others may have even had tears as her mommy left.  Maybe you learned how to calm your rambunctious Daisy. After one year, their vests have petals, maybe Journeys badges, and a vest full of Girl Scout fun patches.  Your entire Daisy journey can be seen on the girls’ vests!

It’s time to celebrate your accomplishments with a Daisy Girl Scout party!

Get Organized for Your Daisy Girl Scout Party

Your co-leader and you should plan on your last meeting of the year to have the party, as the girls already have that time slot blocked on their schedules.  If you choose a different date and time, then you not only risk having some of the girls not being able to attend due to scheduling conflicts, but there are also field trip forms that you will have to fill out. Avoid that extra thing to do and just have the Daisy Girl Scout party during your regularly scheduled meeting time.

Let your girls help plan the party by making invitations.  You can get free printable Girl Scout coloring pages, print them out and have the girls color them in. On the back, you can print out the important information, like the date and time.

You will also have to decide what you want the girls to bring. As the leader, make it easy on yourself. Create an email sign up list for the parents to respond to, or have them sign up before or after pick up.  List easy finger foods, such as cookies, carrots and dip, and pretzels, as well juice boxes and paper goods. (Sign up for the paper goods-it’s easy and since you are the leader, you deserve a break!)

Then send a mass email to everyone so that the parents know who is responsible for bringing what items.  It keeps everyone accountable.

If you want a smaller, simpler celebration, then your co-leader and you can use the troop funds to buy some snacks, paper goods and the craft materials.

Party Crafts and Activities for Daisy Girl Scouts

Besides eating, you will want to keep the girls engaged in an activity.  You might want to do the craft first, and parents can be there to assist their daughter.  This will help you out, as well as keep the parents off their cell phones! When the craft is cleaned up, then the food can come out for all to enjoy.

Here are some ideas for Daisy Girl Scout crafts that are fun to do, age appropriate, and easy to clean up!

Earn Three Daisy Petals With a Girl Scout Tea Party

For Leaders Pressed for Time, Have a Girl Scout Tea Party and Earn Three Daisy Petals at Once

Updated November 2021
All links work.

One of the many joys of being a Daisy Girl Scout leader is that the girls whom you lead are at such an adorable age.  Most girls love anything feminine, like dolls, crafts and dress up clothes. You can take advantage of this fun aspect of being a little girl and host a tea party with your troop!

This meeting can be a cumulation of earning Daisy petals such as:

Yellow-Friendly and Helpful

Spring Green-Considerate and Caring
Purple-Respect Myself and Others

Girls have to use their manners at a tea party, so these three petals tie in, so if you have not earned them already, you can apply them to what you do at this party.

If you want to make this an end of year party or do this in lieu of a December holiday party, then let the parents know ahead of time so they can be sure to attend and get childcare for other siblings.

At the meeting before your tea party, the girls can make this newspaper tea party hat.  Your co-leader and you can take them home and bring them to the next meeting. And you are also earning the green Daisy petal for "Use Resources Wisely".  Buy cheap plastic flowers from the Dollar Store so girls can put two or three on a hat. Tulle is cheap to buy as well.

Your girls will be so excited for this meeting! Remember to keep it simple and not overdo it-remember the party is for them, not you or the parents! Keep them involved in as many aspects as you can.

Before the meeting, you will need to buy some simple things to make the table sparkle.  A simple pink plastic tablecloth will do, as this will not absorb any spills that might happen and the color is just right for little girls. Splurge on some thematic paper plates and napkins like this:

Use the placemats below to set the table right and give the girls something to do while they are waiting.

Food to Serve

Since this is tea party for girls, little finger foods should be on the menu. Keep in mind food allergies and where you meet, and it is probably best to forgo the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Serve tiny cookies, fruit and vegetables-finger foods that kids love to eat. Remember, keep it fun and simple so you can enjoy it as well!

Platters should be passed around, and remind the girls to use their manners.

A food and a craft that is fun is to have the girls decorate teapot shaped cookies that you baked ahead of time. Ice with white icing from a tub and sprinkle with pastel sugars or Daisy shaped sprinkles.

A Fun Tea Party Craft

After the food has been eaten, the girls can use their manners to help clean up the table if you do not have another clean area to use. Otherwise, have the craft set up in another part of the room.

Again, simplicity is best.  Here are some tea party themed craft kits that come with everything you need. These will make a wonderful souvenir from the party in addition to the Tea Party Fun Patch that you can buy at your local Council Shop.

Girl Scout Daisy Tea Party Favors

This pearl necklace party favor can be handed out at the start of the meeting. There are 16 to a pack.
