World Thinking Day is an annual celebration that takes place on February 22nd by Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all around the world. The day is a reminder of the impact that young girls and women can have on their communities and the world as a whole. In 2024, the theme for World Thinking Day is “Our World, Our Thriving Future: The environment and global poverty” .”

Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from different countries use this day to celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions of their fellow members. They also take this opportunity to learn about global issues and take action to make the world a better place.

One way that Girl Scouts can participate in World Thinking Day is by earning the World Thinking Day award. This award encourages girls to learn about different cultures and traditions, as well as take action to make a positive impact in their communities. Another way to celebrate this day is by organizing cultural events, such as food festivals, dances, and performances, that showcase the diversity of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world.

Does My Troop Have to Celebrate World Thinking Day 2024 on February 22nd?

This question was raised in one of the Facebook groups that I belong to. After reading the responses from other leaders, I did my own research just to be sure what was posted was correct.

The answer is no, you do not have to celebrate World Thinking Day 2024 on the exact day, or even in February. Fit it in when it works for your troop.

“Making the world a better place is Girl Scout Law, so it’s no surprise we have a holiday dedicated to doing just that. Each February 22, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides across 150 countries celebrate World Thinking Day. It’s a day of international friendship and a time to stand up for causes that could improve the lives of girls around the globe. And while the holiday itself comes in February, the World Thinking Day Award can be earned at any time of year.“

This news will be a welcome bit of information, as so many are knee deep into cookies sales and earning cookie badges.

While you are knee deep in cookies and petals right now, one of the three major Girl Scout holidays is right around the corner and you need to start planning now for your February meeting!

What is World Thinking Day?

World Thinking Day is celebrated every year on February 22nd. Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world do activities from other countries to celebrate their sisterhood in scouting. Of course, if your meeting is not held on the exact day, you can still celebrate!  Plan you festivities on the meeting day closest to the date.

Each year a different theme is selected.  For World Thinking Day 2015, the theme is "We can create peace through partnerships."

Girls can easily understand the concept of helping others and cooperation.  Any child who has played on a team knows the importance of getting along and working together for a common goal.

Since you are leading young children, it can be a really simple thing for you to plan.  You can pick one country and have the girls look at pictures or girls from those countries dressed in their uniform (you can search for these on the internet).

You can then ask the girls what they know about this country.

More fun can involve:

Eating foods from this country
Doing a craft or a Girl Scout Swap from this country

There are three official Girl Scout holidays, and the first one of the new year is next month, so it is time to start planning! World Thinking Day, which is celebrated every February 22nd, is when Girl Scouts from 146 countries around the world think of each other and promote the sisterhood of scouting. It involves doing a project of some kind, especially one that helps those who are living in poverty.

Each year there is a different theme. This year the theme is "Connect". 

If you are wondering how to incorporate World Thinking Day with your meeting plan, have no fear! The GSUSA has ideas for you!

Here is the GSUSA's World Thinking Day 2016's website. You will find what kinds of connections the movement wants girls to make. If you scroll to the bottom and click on the "Daisies, Brownies, Juniors" tab, there is a list of activities that your girls can do to earn this patch. (Which, by the way, you should order early as they tend to run out as the date approaches. Contact your local Council store to place your order.)

Books for Girl Scout World Thinking Day 2019

I know that it is still cookie season, but if you have read my blog you know that I am an organizer and a planner! One way to reduce your stress as a leader is to plan ahead, which is why you need to be thinking about World Thinking Day in three weeks. It will be here before you know it!

The theme for World Thinking Day 2019 is "Leadership".  In this blog post, I share a simple 5 step meeting plan that will work well with Daisy Scouts. 

You may also want to check out your local Council's website and see if there are any World Thinking Day events your troop can register for. This takes the pressure off of you for planning the celebration. Remember, if you decide to do a Council event, let the parents know and do not stress if only a handful of girls participate. It is their parents' choice to attend or not.

Many troops like to explore the culture of another country and create their World Thinking Day meeting and activities around that country. One way to springboard into this is with a good, age appropriate book.

As a leader who has never been fond of the Journeys program, you will not find any plans for them here. With cookie season, World Thinking Day, Girl Scout Week, field trips and bridging, not to mention any community service you have planned, there really is no need to add in a Journey.

Your Ninth Second Year Girl Scout Daisy Meeting

Earn the Girl Scout Daisy Talk It Up Leaf

If you did not sell Girl Scout cookies last year and want to take a gentle plunge into the world of selling them, then now is the time to get things started. Many Councils have sales during the winter months, so if this is the case for you, the time for cookie selling preparation is now.

The first thing you need to understand about selling cookies with Girl Scout Daisies is that they have a limited attention span and all sales are dependent upon parental participation. Over the years I have spent a lot of time writing blog posts about this, but a leader needs to accept the reality that if a girl does not sell cookies, either individually or at a booth, it is TOTALLY OUT OF HER CONTROL. Let it go, and she can help with cookie selling prep to make her feel like she is part of the troop team. You will not change the minds of non-committed parents, and troop money is troop money. 

Meeting Prep

Before your meeting, you will need to know how much per box of cookies your troop will be earning so that you can create a visual for the girls for your next meeting.

Ask the girls what kinds of trips and activities they would like to do. Write down these ideas and tell them that at your next meeting, you will share how many boxes THE TROOP needs to sell in order to make these activities happen. You will make a visual on a chart. 

For example, if a trip to Build-a-Bear costs $20.00 per girl, and each box sold earns 50 cents, and you have six girls in your troop, then the troop needs to sell 240 boxes so that the trip can take place (40 boxes per girl). Of course, these costs are made up, but your chart should have the Build-a-Bear Logo the number 240 next to a picture of a box of cookies. Do your chart from cheapest idea to most expensive.

On another chart, make a bar with the different goals labeled and pictured. At each meeting, tally up what the girls have sold AS A TROOP. They can see that the more they sell, the bigger the trip...and there may even be money to do more than one adventure! Whatever you do, comparing girls is wrong and please do not do it. Keep charts solely for the purpose of TROOP GOALS.

Your Tenth Second Year Girl Scout Daisy Meeting

Earn the Girl Scout Daisy Making Choices Leaf

The Girl Scout Daisy financial literacy leaves tie in together nicely, so if there is some overlap, that is fine. Repetition is a good way for kids to learn and it certainly helps!

During this meeting, if you have time, have the girls make posters and signs for their cookie booth.

Go over any cookie sale updates that you have. If a goal has already been met, celebrate with a special treat. It can be food, a fun patch, or a special sticker or pencil from the Girl Scout Shop.

Celebrate World Thinking Day (February 22nd)

As a Girl Scout, World Thinking Day is a holiday that comes once a year and is an easy one to insert into your long term planning. Since this may be your first cookie selling season, you do not need to go overboard with planning.

Your Thirteenth Second Year Girl Scout Daisy Meeting

Girl Scout Week

Right after World Thinking Day is another Girl Scout holiday, Girl Scout Week. Celebrated during the week where March 12th falls, this is a fantastic opportunity for girls to use some of their earned cookie profits to help others. The very first Girl Scout meeting took place on March 12, 1912, and every year this is remembered by doing things for others.

Go on a Field Trip

This is the time to go on a field trip since the weather is getting nicer and spring fever is starting. Since you will not have all of your cookie money, try to take an inexpensive or free field trip. The police station, the firehouse, or a local business like an ice cream store or supermarket may be able to take your troop on a tour.

Your Fifteenth Second Year Girl Scout Daisy Meeting 

It's Time to Think About Bridging

If your calendar is like mine, then April is a month where we have always had one meeting due to Spring Break. With this being your second year as Daisy leader, it is time to start planning your bridging ceremony and have the girls as involved as possible.

I have always been of the opinion that bridging should be at the last meeting of the year. This time slot has been carved out for the girls and the parents as well. If you meet after school and have parents who work outside the home, giving them a heads up about bridging one month in advance will permit them to clear their work calendars so they can attend. 

At this meeting, talk about what bridging is and have them make the invitations to send home.

World Thinking Day Meeting Ideas for Daisy Scouts-A 5 Step Plan

If you are still trying to figure out what to do for World Thinking Day, here is a quick and easy lesson plan for you to follow.

Step 1-Pick a Country

Since this is Daisy Scouts, it does not have to be "girl led"- select a place that is easy for you! At the Making Friends website, they have plenty of ideas for several different countries. 

Once you have selected a country, run off a free printable passport for each girl to make. If you do not want to use your own ink, go to a store to run them off and save the receipt for reimbursement. 

Step 2-Get Pictures

Back in the pre-internet days when I first started my teaching career, I had to use books to show pictures of places to my students. You can do the same. You can also go to a travel agency and get brochures and make a poster of the things you want the girls to know.

Step 3-Get Moving

After the girls have learned a bit about the country, it is time to have them do some dancing! YouTube is a fantastic resource for you. When I did the Junior Girl Scout Dance badge with my troop, I learned how to do the Mexican Hat Dance and relearned how to do the Israeli Mayim (water) Dance to teach the girls. Don't be shy...little girls can only sit for so long and if you want the next part of the meeting to go well, they need to get the wiggles out.

Step 4-Craft Time

Make a craft or Swap that represents the country. Again, the Making Friends website makes this a no-brainer to plan.

Step 5-Let's Eat!

To end your meeting, have prepared a treat from this country. You can make it at home or if it is no-bake, be adventurous and have the girls make it at the meeting. If the girls do not want to eat it, then that is their choice.

Girl Scout Daisy Meeting Ideas January to May

Happy New Year! It is time to get back into your Daisy Girl Scout leader mode after spending a week or more off from school with your kids. You are now ready to begin your journey through the second half of your first Daisy Girl Scout year. These meeting ideas will get you through to May, when many troops stop meeting for the summer.

Just like the first eight Daisy leader meetings, you can do most of these activities in any order you wish. If you live in a cold area, you may have to adjust your schedule for snow days, as when school is closed you won't be meeting. Be sure to remember to plan it out with you co-leader and share the responsibilities of planning your meetings. Get everything you plan to do in writing, send her an email with what you both agreed to set out an accomplish, and tackle each meeting together.

Look for after holiday sales for savings on craft materials for the rest of the year. Remember to bring your troop checkbook and your Tax Exempt ID paper.

Your Ninth Daisy Girl Scout Meeting-Earn the Orange Daisy Petal Responsible for What I Say and Do

Many adults make New Year's resolutions at the beginning of the year. You can tie in this idea with earning the orange Daisy petal and being responsible for your own actions. Talk to the girls about what it means to be responsible.

Ask them if they have any responibilities to do at home, like make their bed or clean up after dinner. You can read a book about being responsible at this point or just jump right into the activity.Tell your girls that Daisy Girl Scouts need to be responsible for bringing their books and vests to each troop meeting. Being organizedis being responsible, so they are going to make their own Daisy Girl Scout tote bag and keep all things Girl Scout related in that bag;. They will be responsible for bringing the bag to every meeting from now on.

Here is everything you need for your girls to make their own "responsibility bags". The great thing about this craft is that the girls will use their bags for years to come. The Sharpies and fabric markers are an investment, because if they are stored properly, they can also be used for many years for all kinds of crafts and community service projects. Foam flower shapes can be used for all kinds of projects, too. Cards, making gift bags, and puppets are just a few uses for them.

Field Trip

If you live in a cold climate with heavy snowfall, it may be wise not to plan any field trips until spring. That way you do not spend a lot of time planning an activity that has to be cancelled due to inclement weather. You don't want to disappoint the girls!

Your Tenth Daisy Girl Scout Meeting-Earn the Yellow Daisy Petal Friendly and Helpful

Being friendly and helpful ties in nicely with being responsible. For this activity, the girls are going to create "helpful" slips to leave around the house. Complete directions for earning the yellow Daisy petal can be found in this article.

If you know of an older Brownie or Junior troop who wants to be friendly and helpful, ask them to come to a meeting and help the girls make bracelets or some other cool project. This promotes sisterhood among the different Girl Scout levels. The older girls also serve as role models to the younger girls.

If your Daisy troop is selling Girl Scout cookies, you will need to plan a meeting or two around that. Girls earn badges and leaves for cookie sales!

Your Eleventh Daisy Girl Scout Meeting-Earn the Light Blue Daisy Petal Honest and Fair

In February, we celebrate the birthday of two of our greatest presidents, Washington and Lincoln. Both have stories that tie in with being honest. There is the tale about George chopping down the cherry tree and how he could not tell a lie when asked if he did it. And of course, there is "Honest Abe" Lincoln!

Discuss with your girls why it is important to be honest and not lie, and how they feel if someone has not been truthful to them. Following the discussion, you can do with activities with fair and unfair spinners or unequal amounts of candy to drive the point across.

Celebrate this special Girl Scout holiday!

Every year on February 22nd, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world honor each other and the sisterhood of Girl Scouting with World Thinking Day. Each year World Thinking Day has a theme, and according to the Girl Scouts of America website, the year 2015 is dedicated to ending poverty.

World Thinking Day used to be a patch earned and placed on the back of the vest. It is now an official Girl Scout award that Daisy Girl Scouts can earn! You can earn the award one of two ways.There are a list of activities just for Daisies at the Girl Scouts of America website. Just follow those to earn the award.If you want to do something else, you can pick a country and do hands on activities for it. For example, let's say you want to study Japan. You can:

1. Make passports for Japan. This passport, and those for other countries can be found at the Making Friends website.

2. Do a Japanese craft like origami.

3. Bring in a Japanese dessert for the girls to eat with chopsticks

4. Make a Girl Scout Swap that ties into that country.

Your Thirteenth Meeting-Earn the Spring Green Daisy Petal Considerate and Caring

Like the yellow Daisy petal, this one revolves around being empathetic towards others. When I was a Daisy Scout leader, my girls decorated shoe boxes and filled them with items for little girls who lived in a homeless shelter. Field Trip!

With the weather becoming milder, now is the perfect time to go on a field trip. There are many places that your girls can go to for free or fro a small fee. Be sure to get all of your paperwork done in advance and that all of the proper coursework has been done.

Trip approvers need at least two weeks advanced notice to get your outing approved...be nice and give them four. Remember, safety first! Safety guidelines and instructions for all kinds of field trips can be found at your local council website under Safety Checkpoints.

Because of Spring Break, my troop has always met only once during the month of April.  If you find this happening to you and you want another meeting, schedule a field trip for the girls or have an informal meeting at a local park or playground.

You made it...the final Daisy Girl Scout meeting of the year! Since you have already earned all of your Daisy petals, it's time to celebrate.
