30 Fun Ideas for an Olympic Themed Daisy Meeting

This summer we will finally have a return to normalcy. Included in this return are the summer Olympics that will be hosted in Tokyo, Japan. Delayed due to the pandemic, these athletes have had to train longer and harder that their counterparts from previous years.

Whether you are winding down for the summer or have plans for outdoor gatherings, I wrote a post on my main Girl Scout blog that can help you celebrate the summer games.

6 Fun and Easy Girl Scout Summer Meeting Ideas

Just about everywhere, school is out for summer. For some leaders, this means an end to regular meetings until school is back in session. For other leaders, they will continue to meet as scheduled or at least once a month for outings.

There are pros and cons to meeting over the summer.

The Pros

  • Keeping the scouting momentum up
  • Keeping the sisterhood of Girl Scout going during the summer months
  • More laid back feel to meetings
  • You can meet outdoors
  • Meeting times can be more flexible during the less hectic summer months
The Cons

  • No break for the leader-she still has to plan
  • Dealing with different schedules if a girl misses a meeting
  • Parents upset if a girl misses a fun meeting/outing due to vacation or other conflict

There is no right way or wrong way to meet. When my troop was younger, I personally needed the summer break as I was in charge of everything. As a teacher, my summers were my down time to work more at home, get things organized, and quite frankly, recharge my batteries. By taking off each summer, I was more eager to return for Back to Troop.

Now that they are older and busy 11th grade high school Ambassadors (as of Monday when 10th grade ends!), we have had summer meetings since the girls are less busy. We actually enjoy our summer time more because there are no outside distractions, like homework, sports, or after school clubs. Even with summer jobs, the girls have their evenings free to meet.

If you planning on meeting this summer, here are six ideas for you to use.

3 Summer Meeting Ideas for Girl Scout Daisies

I have been a teacher since 1987. In my younger days, July and August were a time for me to do temp work and tutor children. When our children arrived, these two months were for us to hang out and play.

After decades as an educator, as soon as the calendar changes to June, my mind and body begin to unwind. While I am very busy with my synagogue volunteer work and my family obligations, summer meetings were something that, until last summer, I did not do.

When my troop was younger, I needed a break (you can read about the pros and cons of summer meetings in this blog post). With only three Girl Scout Seniors left in my troop, and all with busy high school schedules, summer meetings are a time for us to catch up, go on field trips, and do a required Journey for the Gold Award. Meetings over the school year are tough to schedule.

For leaders of younger scouts, you do not need to have a meeting if you do not want to. If you do meet, here is a blog post with three fun ideas for a summer Girl Scout meeting.

Go Fruit Picking

If you live near a farm that has a Pick Your Own fruit, you can schedule that for one morning of fun (it's cooler in the early hours of the day).

Pizza Party

Invite the girls over to your house for a pizza party! You can buy premade dough or pie crusts and the girls can make their own pizzas with the toppings you provide. Place each on foil with the child's name in Sharpie so that the girls get their own pizza creation.

Did you know that you could put pizza on the grill? Place the pies on foil pans and put on the grill. DELICIOUS and no need to heat your oven!

Or you can have the girls make solar ovens and then cook their pizza! There are many ways to do this...just search and find which method would work best for you.

In your backyard, play some games and just enjoy being together. No agenda necessary!

No Bake Party

There are tons of delicious no bake recipes for kids. The girls can have a good time learning basic kitchen skills and eating what they have made.

You can have them decorate chef hats or aprons as a craft.

Ideas for Summer Girl Scout Meetings

Updated June 2019

With the school year over in some parts of the country and with the end fast approaching in others, Girl Scout leaders need to decide whether or not to meet over the summer. There are pros and cons to summer meetings.

As a teacher, summer has always been my recovery time. Except for the first few years of my marriage when we were saving for a house and we had no children, I do not work for pay. The time off  I get between classes is a time for me to get refreshed, recharge my batteries, and renew my spirits. I carried this over into my Girl Scout leader years. After nine months of carrying the full load, I needed a break. Plus, my daughter went to day camp and would not be able to attend meetings I would be planning. Meetings always resumed at the end of September.

If you decide that you wish to meet, here are some ideas for you.

Girl Scout Summer Meetings With a Theme

In a blog post on my Girl Scout Leader site, I wrote about three fun meetings you could have with your girls-a beach theme meeting, an ice cream theme meeting and a no sleepover slumber party theme. You can find them here.

No Need to Plan Activities

If you want to meet informally with your girls, then here are two ideas for an easy Girl Scout summer meeting. Use events in your community as the base for your gathering.

In this Daisy Activities blog post, I wrote about using the library calendar of events to be a meeting for your young troop. Parents are required to stay and because this is an unofficial event, no paperwork is needed to complete.

Michaels Craft Stores, as well as others, have crafting classes for children during the summer months. If you are going to pay with troop funds, then you will need to fill out the necessary paperwork. If you are just going to have the parents pay the small fee and do it informally, then that step is unnecessary.

Council Events are posted on your council's website. See what is available for Daisy Girl Scouts and sign up!

One More Summer Activity Idea for Troops

Girl Scout meeting ideas for summer

Summer is here, school is out, and if you are one of those adventurous leaders who is meeting over the summer, here is another awesome idea for you to utilize.

Go to your Council's website and find out what THEY are offering during July and August!

This idea came to me via an email from my daughter's Cadette troop leader. There are some wonderful trips and events for the girls to do, all planned for leaders. All they have to do is register and pay (if there is a cost). Unfortunately, my daughter cannot go on the first planned trip because she will be in camp, but that is how things sometimes work out.

Because of vacation schedules and camps, many girls are busy during a Council sponsored outing. But that does not mean you cannot go on one if all cannot attend, especially if you are doing it loosey-goosey like my daughter's leader. Since our troop is entering it's eighth year, we have our vibe established and our philosophy is known.

Since we are still grateful to be an active troop at this stage of the scouting game, we go by the mantra: If you can come, great! If not, hopefully you can go on the next outing (which my daughter can attend, since she will not be at camp that week).

Use your Council's website to help plan your summer gatherings.

Craft Classes at Michael's-Cheap Summer Meeting Idea for Daisy Scouts!

*This post contains affiliate links.

While many troops take the summer off, if you are a leader who is interested in getting together with your girls during the summer months-informally or formally-then you might want to look into the 30 minute craft classes that Michael's Craft Stores has to offer.

Every Saturday from 10:00 am to Noon, there is a different class offered.  The cost is $2.00 per child, and this can be paid for by the parents if this is not a formal meeting.

You can do a mass email and tell them what time you will be there with your daughter and that you would love for the girls to see each other. Let them know the cost and that they are responsible for it, as well as staying with their child.

Here is the link for the Michael's Kids Club for the list of classes offered.
